An easy way to get more practice is by talking on the telephone. However, for this exercise, you don’t actually need to be talking to a native Polish speaker – or even any speaker at all!
As you go about your daily business, you can hold a telephone to your ear and work on some of the Polish which you have learned. Jimmy Naraine’s video explains the undercover way of learning languages by talking on the phone in more detail.
Talking on the phone doesn’t need to make sense, just talk
It doesn’t even necessarily have to be a whole conversation – just pick a handful of sentences which you’d like to recall and start talking into the phone. No one will find it strange, because to them it looks like you’re just having a normal telephone conversation. In fact, the only people who might find it odd are the only people that can understand you – Polish speakers. Of course, if there happens to be a Polish speaker around, talk to them instead!
If you’re not sure of what sentences you should be practising, flick through a phrasebook to get a few useful ideas. The ones I recommend are Lingea’s phrasebook and Lonely Planet’s. Alternatively, you can use some of the phrases and sentences from one of my downloadable Polish Perfection Packs.
Just remember to set your phone to silent while you do this – it might seem odd if someone calls you midway through your “conversation”! Try this technique out today. You can do it pretty much anywhere. It’s a really simple way to practise your Polish when there isn’t a native around.
